Miami Dade College, in collaboration with the Spanish Cultural Center of Miami and Latinofusión, is presenting a rare collection of films and documentaries by Cuban directors, as well as filmmakers from Spain, Russia, Germany, Brazil, and Poland, among other countries, regarding Cuba.
Some of the films are being shown in the United States for the first time. The showcase features more than 40 films that often look beyond the popular themes presented in many movies and books about Cuba.
“Island Burden: Films about Cuba” opens at 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 17, with the U.S. premiere of Los Dioses Rotos, a drama by Ernesto Daranas about a university professor who delves into Old Havana’s San Isidro neighborhood, a gateway into the world of prostitution.
The Florida premier of La Mala, about a woman driven to become a singer like Cuban legend “La Lupe,” will take place on closing night. The film’s star, Lena Burke, will perform a free concert following the screening at Cubaocho Art Center, 1465 S.W. Eight St, across from the Tower Theater.
Island Burden runs through Aprril 30 at MDC’s Tower Theater, 1508 SW Eighth St., Miami. Some films have English subtitles.
Admission to most films is $6. Opening night is $10, and closing night is $20. Complete schedule and information are here.
There will be one free screening, Malas Temporadas, at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 25.
