Free air show in Homestead

thunderbirdsHomestead Air Reserve Base is inviting its neighbors to a free air show Nov. 7-8 as a way to give thanks and foster awareness for the local military units. Wings over Homestead will be the first air show hosted by the Air Force at the base since before Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

Wings Over Homestead’s feature performers will be the USAF Thunderbird.

The event will include aerial acrobatics, skydiving, vintage airplanes, a jet car, simulated dogfights and helicopter rescue missions. Thunderbird pilots will be available for autographs and photos, and the Air Force, Navy, Army, Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security will all be represented on the ground. There will be a space-themed Kidz Zone with a climbing wall, slides and bounce house.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but gates may close early if the crowd is too large.

‘Sleepless Night’ in Miami Beach

sleeplessnight2From 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, until 7 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 8,  Miami Beach will stay up all night with more than 150 free arts and entertainment events at 80 locations throughout the city as part of Sleepless Night.

Events include free museum admissions, indoor and outdoor art installations and performances, architectural tours, dance (and dancing), theater, music, slam poetry, film, video, fashion, acrobatics, comedy and more, including several unique collaborations and South Florida and world premieres.

Free shuttle buses with onboard arts programming will connect the four zones of activity and remote parking for the full 13-hour night.

We couldn’t begin to list all the exciting activities on tap, so check the schedule and have a Cuban coffee before you go.

Free kids’ workshops at Home Depot

trivetOn the first Saturday of the month, The Home Depot hosts a free kids workshop.

  • On Saturday, Nov. 7, kids can build their own tile trivet.
  • On Saturday, Dec. 5, kids can build their own wagon.

The free kids workshops are 9 a.m. to noon, and the kids leave with their project, an orange apron and an achievement pin.

Coral Gables Gallery Walk

artintheparkFriday, Nov. 6, is the first Friday of the month, and that means it’s time for the free Gallery Walk from 7 to 10 p.m.  in downtown Coral Gables.

Art in the Park is back for the season, with free music at Ponce Circle Park. This week, local bands Tilt and Eruption will play ’80s and ’90s music.

Lincoln Road, Grove art walks

The two newest free neighborhood art walks will be Saturday, Nov. 7.

The Coconut Grove Art Stroll is at the Promenade at Mayfair, 2911 Grand Ave., 7 to 11 p.m. The event includes art, food, drink, live music and dance performances, and painting lessons for children. Print the flyer off the MySpace page to enter to win a Miami skyline photo.

The Lincoln Road Art Walk is is 7 to 10 p.m. at the locations of Art Center South Florida on Lincoln Road in South Beach.

Free piano concert in Gables

Enjoy a free piano performance  at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 at Granada Presbyterian Church, 950 University Drive, Coral Gables.

Pianist Magdalena Baczewska, a resident of New York, was born in Poland and earned a doctor of musical arts degree from the Manhattan School of Music. She will perform a program of Bach and Chopin: Preludes and Fugues, Polonaises and Chopin Sonata No. 2 Op. 35
